map, original printed paper wrappers, housed in a custom cloth case,
scattered light foxing to text, rear wrapper detached but present, portions
of back-strip missing, else very good. The Thomas W. Streeter copy with his
bookplate and penciled notes on front free endpaper. The work includes a
voyage up the Missouri; Indian fighting; hunting on the plains and
Rockies;
and winter adventures on the prairies. Boynton devotes a chapter in this
work to the Kansas Question, which he feared could open up the west to the
forces of slavery. “According to an article by Cora Dolbee in the Kansas
Historical Quarterly 20:115-48, Boynton was the sole author of this
book. He wrote as a member of a committee for the American Reform Tract and
Book Society, and the Kansas League of Cincinnati.” –WCB.
