Catto, was a free black born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1810, he brought his family north after 1840 to Philadelphia. His son Octavius T. Catto, was an important civil rights leader in Philadelphia, murdered by a mob in 1871. The present work provides a detailed history of the First African Presbyterian Church, founded in 1807 by John Gloucester. In addition Catto appends sketches of eighteen black churches in Philadelphia. Very scarce. Afro-Americana 2129; Blockson 8983; Sabin 11558; Work p. 405
